Case Study

TrainME

We designed and built an online training pathway tool for Mitsubishi Electric that helps heating professionals find their personalised route into heat pump installation. From career changers to experienced engineers, TrainME turns a confusing accreditation landscape into a clear, actionable plan.

The Challenge

The UK needs 600,000 heat pump installations a year. It does not have the installers.

The UK government wants 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028. In 2025 the country managed around 125,000. The technology exists. The grants are in place. The gap is people. There are simply not enough qualified, accredited installers to deliver the transition from gas to heat pumps at the pace the country needs.

For the tradespeople who could fill that gap, the path forward is unclear. Multiple qualification routes, different accreditation bodies, manufacturer-specific training, MCS certification requirements. A plumber thinking about moving into heat pumps has no easy way to work out what they need to do, in what order, and where to start.

Mitsubishi Electric, as the UK's leading heat pump manufacturer and an award-winning LCL-accredited training provider, wanted to solve that problem. Not with another brochure. With a tool that gives every professional a personalised answer to the question: what do I need to do next?

What We Built

A few questions. A clear pathway. A direct booking.

We built TrainME as a web-based tool accessible on any device. It works like a guided assessment: the user answers a small number of questions about their background, existing qualifications, and career goals. The tool then generates a personalised training report showing exactly which courses and qualifications they need, in what order, to reach their goal.

Crucially, TrainME does not stop at the recommendation. It integrates directly with Mitsubishi Electric's online training calendar, allowing users to view upcoming course dates and book onto the next available session in a single flow. The gap between “I want to learn” and “I am enrolled” is as short as we could make it.

The tool handles three distinct user journeys. Career changers get the full picture: what qualifications they need, what experience is required, and how long the pathway takes. Experienced heating engineers get the fastest route to add heat pumps to their skill set. And installers who already work with heat pumps can check they are on track for MCS accreditation and identify any gaps.

Guided Assessment

A small number of targeted questions about background, qualifications, and goals. Three distinct journeys for career changers, experienced engineers, and existing installers.

Personalised Training Report

Exactly which courses and qualifications are needed, in what order. Linked directly to LCL-accredited qualifications at Mitsubishi Electric's Hatfield Training Centre.

Direct Course Booking

Integrated with the online training calendar. Users view upcoming dates and book onto the next available session without leaving the tool.

On the Show Floor

Built for the web. Deployed on the stand.

TrainME was not just designed for online use. We built it to work across multiple formats, including large-scale touchscreen kiosks for exhibition stands. At the 2025 Installer Show and the UKPS exhibition in Chelsea, TrainME ran on self-service kiosks on the Mitsubishi Electric stand alongside staff-operated iPads for guided, face-to-face sessions.

Installers walking the show floor could step up to a kiosk, complete the assessment in minutes, and receive a branded PDF report with their personalised training pathway sent straight to their email. For stand staff, the iPad version turned every conversation into a consultative experience.

The result: deeper conversations, higher-quality leads, and a live feed of qualified, engaged professionals going directly to Mitsubishi Electric's training division. TrainME gave the stand a purpose beyond product display. It made Mitsubishi Electric a partner in every visitor's career development.

Under the Hood

Simple for the user. Structured underneath.

The logic behind TrainME is more complex than it looks. Different starting points lead to different pathways. A gas engineer with five years of experience and an existing water regulations certificate needs a very different route to someone coming from a completely different trade. The tool maps these permutations into a clean, linear experience that feels personal rather than generic.

The training report links directly to specific courses at Mitsubishi Electric's Hatfield Training Centre, including nationally recognised LCL qualifications developed with CIPHE, the Heat Pump Association, and MCS. These include Level 3 awards in low temperature heating systems, heat pump installation and maintenance, and water regulations certification.

By connecting the assessment directly to the booking system, TrainME removes the friction that stops people from acting. No need to search the training centre website separately. No need to work out which course matches which recommendation. The tool does that work for you.

The Bigger Picture

Another piece of the Ecodan digital ecosystem

TrainME is the latest addition to a digital product family we have been building with Mitsubishi Electric over several years. See My Ecodan lets homeowners visualise a heat pump in their garden. Find My Ecodan helps them assess suitability and connects them with an accredited installer. The Ecodan Selection Tool supports installers and sales teams during the sizing process. And now TrainME ensures there are enough qualified professionals to actually install the systems.

Together, these products cover the complete heat pump journey: awareness, consideration, purchase, installation, and the workforce pipeline that makes it all possible.

Client Feedback

As demand for heat pumps continues to grow, it is vital that installers have access to clear, high-quality training pathways. TrainME has been developed to remove complexity and give professionals confidence in the steps they need to take.

Why It Matters

You cannot decarbonise heating without the people to do it.

The UK's heat pump targets will not be met by technology alone. They depend on having a large, skilled, accredited workforce ready to install systems at scale. TrainME is a small tool that addresses a big problem: making it easier for tradespeople to understand, plan, and start the training they need. By reducing friction between intent and action, it helps Mitsubishi Electric grow not just its customer base, but its entire installer ecosystem.
