See My Ecodan
We designed and built an augmented reality app that lets homeowners see a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump in their garden before they buy one. Over 700 downloads, rated 5.0 on the App Store, and used by George Clarke at the Ideal Home Show.
The Challenge
People cannot buy what they cannot picture
Most homeowners have never seen a heat pump. They do not know how big one is, what it sounds like, or whether it will fit beside the back door. Mitsubishi Electric makes the UK's leading heat pump range, Ecodan, at their factory in Livingston, Scotland. But brochures and spec sheets were not converting curious visitors into confident buyers.
The gap between interest and action is enormous. Over 80% of UK homeowners say they care about climate change, but only around 6% have switched to a heat pump. Mitsubishi Electric needed a tool that made the product feel real. Something homeowners could try in their own garden, on their own phone, in under a minute.

What We Built
Point your phone. Place a heat pump. See it for real.
We designed and built See My Ecodan from scratch. A free augmented reality app for iOS and Android that detects flat outdoor surfaces through the phone camera and places a to-scale 3D Ecodan model into the scene. Users drag to reposition, rotate with two fingers, and walk around the unit to see it from every angle.
Take a photo. Share it with your partner or your installer. The whole thing takes under a minute. No sign-up, no login, no data collected. Zero friction.
We handled everything: UX research, interface design, 3D modelling, AR development, cross-device testing, and deployment to both app stores.
UX & Interface Design
Research-led design with a focus on simplicity. Surface detection, model placement, and photo capture in under a minute.
3D Modelling & AR
To-scale 3D Ecodan models with accurate dimensions. ARKit and ARCore for reliable surface detection across devices.
Cross-Platform Development
Native apps for both iOS and Android, tested across a wide range of devices. Published to the App Store and Google Play.

Impact
From the Ideal Home Show to the App Store
The app got its highest-profile moment when Ecodan Ambassador George Clarke used See My Ecodan at the Ideal Home Show 2025 at Olympia London. Clarke is one of the UK's most recognised voices on housing, known for Channel 4's Amazing Spaces and Restoration Man. He has been the Ecodan brand ambassador since 2018 and has a heat pump in his own home.
Seeing him demonstrate the app live, in front of thousands of visitors, proved the product works exactly as intended: making heat pumps feel tangible for people still deciding. Mitsubishi Electric shared the moment on LinkedIn, generating strong engagement across the heating and renewables industry.
The app launched in December 2024 with industry press coverage in Buildingtalk and Energy Sustainability Solutions. It has been updated four times since, with new models and UX improvements. The 5.0 star App Store rating reflects the quality of the experience, and the project sits within a multi-year relationship that also includes the Ecodan Selection Tool, SmartExpo exhibition experiences, and DevOps services.
Client Feedback
Why It Matters
125,000 heat pumps installed in the UK last year. Millions more to go.
The UK heat pump market grew 27% in 2025, with government grants of £7,500 per installation and new regulations requiring boiler manufacturers to increase heat pump sales. But heat pumps still represent roughly 1% of UK households. Tools like See My Ecodan close the gap between interest and action by turning an abstract decision into something you can see, photograph, and share.
